Chalkin’ Up Joy: How Sidewalk Art Became My Favorite Way to Share Beauty

What started as a little springtime fun with my daughter Emma turned into something much bigger than I ever imagined. In 2022, we grabbed some chalk, stepped outside, and began doodling’ just for the joy of it. I called it Chalk Time with Emma, a way for the two of us to be creative, breathe fresh air, and make memories.
But the more we drew, the more I realized chalk had its own special magic. It blends like butter; wipes clean without a fuss and turns every patch of pavement into a blank canvas. Our driveway became a gallery, sometimes messy, always meaningful.
Soon, it wasn’t just “Emma time.” I started testing what else I could create. Now, I’ll be the first to say, I still can’t draw faces to save my life (it’s truly my artistic kryptonite). But that didn’t stop the magic. Friends, coworkers, and even folks I didn’t know started noticing my art popping up on other platforms.
One day, my sweet friend Lindsey came across a Chalk It Up challenge hosted by our local university. We joined forces with one goal: create something unforgettable. We brainstormed, sketched, and sprinkled in some Southern sparkle and wouldn’t you know, we landed third place! I might’ve thought we could’ve snagged second, but the gal who took first? She earned every bit of it.
Nowadays, Disney themes are still my favorite go-to, but I’ve stretched my style, creating chalk art for Oktoberfest, church VBS, and local events. Watching folks light up when they see one of my designs? That’s the real win. It reminds me why I keep coming back to the sidewalk.
Even though it all gets washed away with the rain or the garden hose… there’s something beautiful about that, too. No pressure. No permanence. Just a splash of joy, some colorful dust, and the memory of a moment shared.
Southern Sidewalk Tips (With Extra Charm!)
Draw What You Know: Start with scenes from your own front porch, rocking chairs, mason jars, magnolias, or your grandma’s favorite pie. Familiar things spark the best ideas.
Let the Whole Porch Join In: Grab the kids, cousins, neighbors, or whoever’s walkin’ by. Some of the best creations come from a handful of hands and a whole lotta laughter.
Share with the Community: Ask your church, local library, or town hall if they’d like a seasonal sidewalk piece, something fun for VBS, fall festivals, or just for folks to enjoy on their morning strolls.
Bring Snacks: This might be sidewalk art, but we’re still Southern! A batch of cookies or sweet tea on the porch makes chalk time extra special.
Use the Weather: Sunny days dry fast, but cloudy ones blend better! Sidewalk can be hot, but I like it when its a little cloudy, because you can enjoy being on the sidewalk a little longer.
Avoid Texture: I know we have all different kinds of textures, but asphalt and smooth cement are my go-to's. If there is even a hint of gravel, it will surely eat your chalk up!
Celebrate the Temporary: Like Sunday’s casserole, it doesn’t last forever, but it sure leaves folks smiling. There’s joy in knowing your art brightened someone’s day, even if it washed away.
